Crowns and Bridges
Bridges and crowns are fixed prosthetic devices that are cemented onto existing teeth or implants. Crowns are used to entirely cover or “cap” a damaged tooth or cover an implant. A crown would be the preferred option if there is a substantial amount of tooth structure missing above the gum line. Bridges are commonly used to cover a space if you’re missing one or more teeth. Gaps left by missing teeth eventually cause the remaining teeth to rotate or shift into the empty spaces, resulting in a bad bite. A crown is recommended to:
- Replace a large filling when there isn’t enough tooth remaining
- Protect a weak tooth from fracturing
- Restore a fractured tooth
- Cover a tooth that has had root canal treatment
- Attach a bridge
- Cover a discolored or poorly shaped tooth
- Cover a dental implant
